by HIV, as well as, the complexities and barriers women often face when accessing these
resources. National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is Sunday, March 10, 2019,
but ASA’s event will be observed on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 from 6:30PM – 8:30PM.
This free event includes an all-woman forum to discuss what being a woman and navigating
sexual health services is like in Austin. It will be held at the ASA Springdale location (1023
Springdale Rd., Building 14A) featuring community partners, safer sex supplies, HIV/STI
testing, games/prizes, food, and much more! The purpose of this event is to empower women to
get tested, know their status, and find community support. Bilingual programming provided.
HIV and AIDS are still widespread public health issues, and women remain vulnerable to
infection — especially African-American and Hispanic women. 3 Regardless of race, ethnicity,
age, or sexual orientation, women continue to comprise 19% of new diagnoses. HIV does not
discriminate. In fact, 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, 2 and nearly a quarter of
them are women (23%). 1
ASA observes this awareness day because our goal is to assist women living with HIV or
vulnerable to HIV infection achieve better health outcomes and build healthier futures for
themselves and their families.
