Precision Medicine refers to the tailoring of medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient. By taking into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle as an approach for disease treatment and prevention, precision medicine presents a powerful framework that could ease disparities in health care experienced by racial and ethnic minorities. Or does it? During this session, we will review the long history of race and medicine and provide an update on the field of precision medicine. Next, we will discuss the potential impact of precision medicine on existing disparities in health care. Finally, we will highlight the challenges of precision medicine and reveal its limitations in the quest to eliminate health care disparities.
