DYGL: After
releasing their debut album earlier this year, Tokyo’s hottest new
band DYGL are making their way over for their first UK shows next
week. ‘Say Goodbye To Memory Den’, is a riotous trip through
indie, rock’n’roll and punk – all with a cheeky wink to some of
the ’00s finest bands. It’s no surprise then that Albert Hammond
Jr, guitarist in The Strokes, produced the
startling record alongside Strokes producer Gus Oberg. - NME
TRUDY AND THE
ROMANCE: Trudy and the Romance sound like: a lot of different bands,
and yet sound like nothing else you’ve ever heard. Similar artists:
Spring King, Mac Demarco, King Krule, The Beatles. Their story: Trudy
And The Romance are a three-piece band sounding like they’re from
the 1950s with rock and old school rhythm and blues-leaning
tendencies. Funnily enough, there isn’t anyone called Trudy in the
band, with Oliver, Lewis and Brad the three members. Many have tried
to decide precisely what genre the band fit into, although the band
have rather usefully offered up ‘mutant 50s pop’ as a
description. The band began in 2015 with debut single Behave, as the
band continued to build their live reputation as one of the most
kick-ass touring acts to come out of the UK for a long time. Their
meteoric rise to the big time looks set to continue following the
recent release of new single Is There A Place I Can Go, which is
taken from their forthcoming new EP Junkyard Jazz, due out on 17
November. They’re on NME’s 100 Bands For 2017 list and the 14th
most-blogged artist of 2016 via The Hype Machine. Add all these bits
and bobs together and it’s very little surprise that Trudy And The
Romance’s career is taking off in such fine style. - Metro UK
JARED AND THE MILL: Jared & The
Mill hail from the deserts of Arizona, and deal in glossy,
pop-leaning rock. In their own words, the five-piece outlet plays
“Western indie-rock,” and their new LP This Story Is No Longer
Available clocks in at a somewhat-lengthy 17 tracks. Their sound is
reminiscent of the emotionally charged, festival-ready songwriting
you hear from bands like Moon Taxi, Mumford & Sons and Highly
Suspect. Tunes like “Hope” and “Feels Like” are brimming with
stadium-rock energy, and you can visualize the sea of cellphone
lights being waved in the air as frontman Jared Kolesar belts out his
lyrics. (“Feels Like,” in particular, contains a psych-rock
breakdown that is undeniably influenced by Pink Floyd’s endless
plunges into oblivion.) “Dark Highways” is another highlight. The
mid-album number is an anthemic examination of the touring lifestyle,
and finds Kolesar balancing devotion to a loved one with the urge to
“keep on moving.” Audio clips peppered throughout the LP also
move the narrative forward; “Jared & The Mill Sucks” features
a begrudged friend or fan griping about some missing peanut butter.
Album closer “Books” is strategically placed on the tail end of
This Story Is No Longer Available . Over seven-plus minutes, after
banjo riffs and acoustic guitar chords emerge from ethereal noise,
Kolesar bears his soul once more. Allowing the peaks and valleys of
the song to wash over you, it feels like you’re on a late-night
drive, and only your headlights can cut through the dark, desert
landscape. Undoubtedly, it’s a feeling these hard-touring,
Southwestern rockers know quite well. - Relix
SWALLOW THE RAT:
Proving that musical synergy is not restricted by geography,
Swallow the Rat is a sonic force to be reckoned with. With members
hailing from Austin, Texas and Auckland, New Zealand, and a musical
pedigree that includes bands such as My Education, Lost Rockets, Body
Corporate and Deathbeam, Swallow the Rat offers a unique mix of NZ
Post-punk and Texan Psychedelia. Forming in late 2017, Swallow the
Rat wasted no time, immediately recording a number of songs with
acclaimed engineer Nick Abbott at Auckland's Northwestern Recorders,
all of which charted on New Zealand's Alt Charts and Student Radio,
along with receiving air play on KOOP (Austin, TX) and DKFM (CAN). In
mid 2018, they embarked on their first New Zealand tour, and in late
2018 they will return to the studio with Abbott to complete a full
album. In 2019 they will showcase at SXSW in Austin, TX and will
follow this up with a U.S. tour, as well as continuing to play across
New Zealand. - SXSW
STREET QUEER: Street Queer is the alias
for University of Texas at Austin student, Dorian Delafuente, who has
been making a name for himself through rap. “I grew up listening to
a lot female rappers,” says Street Queer as he reminisced buying
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, his first CD. “I love a strong
feminine presence.” Originally from San Antonio, Street Queer
transferred to UT Austin from the University of Houston as a theatre
major. This year, Street Queer joined The PLASTIK Collective which
hosts events in a safe space for alternative queer people in San
Antonio.
Street Queer’s music packs quick punches that are sexually
liberating and honest. He raps proudly about being gay, often calling
himself a ‘faggot,’ as an act of reclaiming the word. You can be
sure to bump your heads to the heavy, trap influenced beats. “It’s
tough to maneuver through music in general, especially hip-hop,”
says Street Queer. “Hip-hop is a very heteronormative culture, It’s
complex. A Latinx person who is queer in hip-hop—that’s a lot to
break down.” His latest single, The Takeover, premiered Nov. 24,
2018. - Orange Mag
MAMA DUKE: Mama
Duke is a 2x Austin Hip-Hop Award winning artist. Taking home both
“Artist of the Year” and “Female Artist of the Year” in one
night, its no wonder she can move effortlessly in a male dominated
industry. Opening up for the group ‘Naughty by Nature’ within’
the first 3 months of her 1st ever performance (since moving to
Austin, Tx to pursue music) gave her the adrenaline she needed to
catapult her into everyones Top 3 females in Hip-Hop in Texas. Since
then, Mama Duke has performed over 200+ times and has recently gone’
on a mini tour. She plans on curating and manifesting the tour of her
dreams in 2019.
