Welcome to Gwichyaa Zhee Austin Premiere

Patagonia
316 Congress Ave., Austin, TX, 78701
0.65km W

Presented by The Wilderness Society, this film shares the story of a familiar tale: the current administration's reduction of protected public lands for oil and gas drilling, although this time in a place we know little about — the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The Gwich'in, a native people who live just north of the Arctic Circle, are fighting to protect the lands and native caribou from the perils of oil and gas development in ANWR. For the Gwich’in, it’s also a story about food security and survival.

NativeOutdoors founder Dr. Len Necefer, a native Navajo, saw striking similarities between the energy and mining exploitation in Bears Ears National Monument and ANWR. In the film, Dr. Necefer travels to Gwichyaa Zhee (also known as Fort Yukon, Alaska) to explore these commonalities and differences.

The film will be immediately followed by a Q&A with the film's narrator Dr. Len Necefer and filmmaker Greg Balkin.
