CRISPR gene editing has the potential to cure cancer or increase food security and is also associated with controversial applications such as resurrecting dinosaurs or enabling designer babies. The extent to which CRISPR is used for good and what ‘good’ actually means is still up for debate in the scientific community. The closer CRISPR-based companies get to commercialization, the more important it will be to engage the general public so that people are informed to make the best decisions for their own health and the health of the world. In this discussion, we plan to review where we are now with CRISPR today, explore the prospects of the technology, and discuss the ethics of its applications.
