The hyper-competitive world of motorsports has always sought to leverage the latest technologies for on-track advantage. Artificial intelligence, advances in energy-storage, and drones are already transforming on-track performance, and enhancing off track fan experience. Yet for all of the advantages that emerging technologies promise, there are also substantial environmental and societal challenges. Formula E, Moto E, F1’s plan for carbon neutrality, and hybrid race cars have emerged from a recognition of escalating concerns about climate-change. Motorsports is seeking to reinvent itself in a bid to remain relevant to a future generation that car-shares and may never own a car; and that may never earn a driver’s license, opting for self-driving cars instead. This session will explore the first tentative steps towards a future where silent cars speed around the track emitting no pollutants, drones race ahead to relay information about the track to the driver, and where AI is pitted against AI in on track competition!
