The history of documentary images is aligned with the foundations of capitalism, imperialism and particularly toxic conceptions of race, ethnicity and gender. However, in recent years, a push by Indigenous, black, brown, female and queer visual journalists has been slowly turning the tides of visual media production, bringing diversity behind the camera and into the frame. This panel unpacks the intersection of news images, digital space, social media and social action as an opportunity to reframe how we understand the human experience. Visual journalists, photo editors and leaders in the movement to diversify documentary images discuss how to tell impactful visual stories from diverse perspectives and why the only way forward for visual journalism is to decolonize.
