While queer style and beauty have gained increased visibility in mainstream fashion and entertainment, there are no federal laws that expressly prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Thus, it is still legal to be fired based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity — including dressing outside the binary — in 26 states across the U.S. Even in states that have enacted legislation prohibiting employment discrimination based sexual orientation and/or gender identity, many LGBTQIA+ employees face implicit bias and structural discrimination in the workplace. This panel will explore the obstacles to dressing visibly queer in the workplace, with with an in-depth focus on the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, identity, and class.
