2016 marked a shift in American optimism around “big tech.” After the election, technology’s ethos in the popular consciousness flipped from liberation technology to surveillance capitalism, a danger to democracy. In this wake, there has been a surge of regulatory pressure aimed at the sector. While most of these regulations seek to address tech policy challenges, are there counter-intuitive implications, and unintended consequences, for human rights? This panel will examine how companies and advocates navigate an increasingly regulated landscape while promoting the rights and freedoms that made tech hopeful in the first place.
