Brazil is a paradox for the LGBTQ+ community: São Paulo is the home of the world’s largest Gay Pride parade. Brazil has the highest annual rate of LGBTQ+ homicide in the world. A majority in Brazil’s Supreme Court has voted in favor of making homophobia and transphobia crimes. The mayor of Rio de Janeiro called for the censorship of Marvel Comic “Young Avengers: The Children’s Crusade” which shows two male characters kissing. Public finance, an essential resource for LGBTQ+ cultural output, is being withheld by politicians as a tool for repression. But queer Brazilians and their allies are fighting back in the courts, on screen, in the streets and on fashion runways.
