In 1999, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated 75 MHz of radio spectrum in the 5.9 GHz band to be used for vehicle and infrastructure communications – what we now call the Safety Band – and other countries are using spectrum in the Safety Band for the same purpose. Since then, state and local governments and the automotive industry have been developing new technologies that rely on the Safety Band, uncluttered by interfering uses. The FCC has proposed to take 45 MHz of the 5.9 GHz band for unlicensed WiFi. This session will discuss the effects of this proposal on transportation safety. This session will be included in full-day of five U.S. DOT-hosted sessions.
