Recent research identifies "faux diversity", the presence of multiple demographic groups, without interaction between them. Such situations characterizes gentrifying neighborhoods around the globe. While increased diversity counteracts the negative effects of segregated neighborhoods, the lack of interaction can reduce the development or maintenance of a sense of community and lead to tensions. I describe the dynamics underlying such situations and discuss strategies that individuals and business owners can utilize to contribute to the development of inclusive, healthy, and sustainable diverse communities.
