Modern parenting is more difficult. Years ago, parents had the support of extended family in raising a child, and had practice with child-rearing of children birthed before their own.
Today, parents have inadequate support in raising children and exponentially more stressors on their lives - insufficient sleep among the worst. In the US, 30% of workers sleep less than 6 hours per night, and sleep deprivation is 50% greater in new parents. Fatigue has been shown to cause the same mental impairment as being drunk, and contributes to weight gain, depression, anxiety, marital stress, and more.
