2020 is the first year the Census will be digitally available to residents. In this panel discussion we'll chat with experts about the research, data and security behind the 2020 Census, learn about what ramifications Census data has on communities and why you should participate.

Lane Becker, Facilitator:
Lane Becker is a strategist and consultant who focuses on meaningful and innovative uses of technology in governments. He was most recently with the US government’s Technology Transformation Service (TTS), where he worked as a digital strategist at 18F, an internal consultancy bringing modern digital practices into government that consulted with, among other agencies, the Census Bureau. Lane was also a Senior Advisor in the Office of Products and Platforms (OPP), which develops new products and services for government-wide use. At OPP, he started and ran the 10x Investments program, https://10x.gsa.gov/, an investment fund that develops ideas sourced from civil servants into technology products and services that benefit the American public.
Lizette Escobedo, Panelist:
Lizette Escobedo is the Director of National Census Program at the NALEO Educational Fund where she leads national efforts to ensure a full count of Latinos in the 2020 Census. Lizette returned to the NALEO Educational Fund to lead Census efforts for the second time, after overseeing national efforts in 2010. Lizette has dedicated over twelve years of her career mobilizing and empowering communities to ensure they have a voice in the democratic process and play an integral role in the policy and legislative decisions that impact their communities and quality of life through innovative and digital organizing strategies.
Maria Filippelli, Panelist:
Maria Filippelli is a Public Interest Technology Census Fellow at New America. Maria engages with national and state organizations, helping them navigate the digital landscape for the 2020 Census. This includes understanding the Census Bureau's system build, how to bridge the digital divide, and emerging digital issues. Maria’s background includes urban planning, civic technology, and data science where her work spanned a variety of issue areas including data poverty, transportation, and civil liberties.
Lorena Molina-Irizarry
Lorena Molina-Irizarry serves as Director of Operations at the Census Open Innovation Labs (COIL) within the U.S. Census Bureau; bringing together technologists, communities and government through open collaboration initiatives like The Opportunity Project and Census Accelerate, to tap into the power of open data, crowd sourcing, cross sector collaboration, through COIL's start-up like tech accelerator. Previously, she served as the Deputy Chief for National Partnerships, engaging and collaborating with national stakeholders and partner supporting 2020 Census efforts, other census surveys & programs and increasing data use and awareness of open data. She previously served as the Technology Communications Liaison for the CIO, leading communications, media and public relations for technology and innovation efforts at the Census Bureau. She has also served as Hispanic Employment Program Manager and leading Diversity & Inclusion initiatives, implementing outreach and recruitment strategies to reach Hispanic audiences and other underrepresented communities.
