Psychedelic drugs were the most studied subject in psychiatry in the 1950’s and 1960’s, before concern about their popularity outside the lab caused a cessation of that research, and their being classified as Schedule One substances, a primary definition of which is “no known medical use”. But that determination was made by political act, not a scientific determination. The resurgence of research on psychedelics has been to see what they tell us about the place of the nervous system in cognition and the formation of personality from a basic science, or mechanism of action, perspective. This has lead to a returned investigation of their uses as medicines. Our present moment sees the emergence of academic research on medical benefits providing the potential to pivot to commercialization.
